Tribulus hystrix, Sandhill Puncture Vine - IMG 6174

This beautiful flower is produced by a tough little plant that thrives in sand dunes in arid outback regions of Australia. It's easy to spot the dazzling flowers, but the spiny seeds that give the plant its common name of 'sand hill puncture vine' are not so conspicuous, and for those without thick soles on their boots, a scream of pain is the first indication that a seed has been discovered.
