Solanum petrophilum, Rock Nightshade - IMG 7586

This low growing Australian native shrub, which is commonly known as 'Rock Nightshade', is one of more than 80 species of Solanum that can be found in Australia. As a member of the Solanaceae family of plants it is closely related to potatoes and tomatoes. Some  species of Solanum are very similar in appearance and produce small edible fruits, while others are extremely poisonous, but It's not known if the fruits of this species are poisonous so that means that it's best to leave S. petrophilum alone and simply admire its attractive flowers. This is a plant that thrives in many arid outback regions of Australia.
