Dingo / Native Dog

Australian Dingo / Native Dog - IMG 6053

The dingo (Canus lupus) is an Australian native dog. Its prey includes small native mammals and birds, but it is a powerful predator that often kills sheep, particularly those that are young or weak. That has made it the enemy of graziers across the country who lay poisoned baits to kill these carnivores. Dingoes have occasionally attacked humans, sometimes with fatal consequences, but animals that have shown such aggression are usually those that live close to national parks and other areas frequented by tourists who feed dingoes - a practise that eventually sees wild animals lose their fear of humans. This animal was photographed, in the wild, near Redbank Gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges, which are easily accessible from the central Australian town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
